Only a clustered index can be dropped online.

Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when you try to drop a nonclustered index online.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Errors of the Severity Level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. You cannot drop a nonclustered index online.

Versions:
This error message was introduced with SQL Server 2005.

IF OBJECT_ID(‘tempdb..#t’) > 0
 DROP TABLE #t
GO
CREATE TABLE #t
(
 id INT,
 c1 XML,
)

CREATE UNIQUE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_t_id ON #t(id)

DROP INDEX IX_t_id
  ON #t
WITH (ONLINE = ON);
GO

Remarks:
In the above example we try to drop the nonclustered index IX_t online. This raises the error.
