Error Message:
Msg 206, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Operand type clash: %ls is incompatible with %ls

Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when you try to use two incompatible operands in an operator.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Error of the Severity level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. You must to try use CAST() or CONVERT() to make the operands compatible with each other.

Versions:
All versions of SQL Server.

Example(s):
USE tempdb;
GO
IF OBJECT_ID(‘tempdb..#t’) > 0
 DROP TABLE #t
GO
CREATE TABLE #t
(
 c1 TEXT
);
GO
INSERT INTO #t SELECT 1;
SELECT MIN(c1)
  FROM dbo.#t
 GROUP BY c1

Remarks:
In the above example we try to insert the integer value 1 into a column of type TEXT. This raises the error.
