XML parsing: line %d, character %d, end tag does not match start tag

Error Message:
Msg 9436, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
XML parsing: line %d, character %d, end tag does not match start tag

Severity level:

This error message appears when during XML parsing an end tag cannot be matched with a corresponding start tag.

The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Errors of the Severity Level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be executed this way. Each end tag must have a corresponding start tag.

This error message was introduced with SQL Server 2005.

DECLARE @x xml
SET @x = ‘<ROOT>111</a></ROOT>’
SELECT @x.query(‘/ROOT/a’)

In the above example we try to query the XML variable @x. Because @x is missing a <a> start tag, the error is raised.
