%sVariable expected: ‘$name’

Error Message:
Msg 2241, Level 16, State 1, Line 6
%sVariable expected: ‘$name’

Severity level:
16.

Description:
This error message appears when in an Xquery a variable was expected, but not found.

Consequences:
The T-SQL statement can be parsed, but causes the error at runtime.

Resolution:
Errors of the Severity level 16 are generated by the user and can be fixed by the SQL Server user. The statement cannot be run this way. The code must either be corrected, so that the variable can be found, or that the variable is not expected at all.

Versions:
This error message was introduced with SQL Server 2005.

Example(s):
DECLARE @xml xml;
SET @xml = ”;
SELECT
    @xml.query(‘for $a in(1, 2, 3), $b in (2, 3, 4),
    where
        $a lt $b
    return sum($a + $b)’) as XML;

Remarks:
In the above example we indicate by the comma after (2, 3, 4), the introduction of another variable. But since that variable is not specified, the error is raised.
