Mainstream database management system (DBMS) technology faces a challenge from new approaches that reject the relational model. The battleground is set to be the market for business intelligence based on very large databases.
Some main players in DBMS software are already jockeying for position with revamped database products aimed at recapturing ground lost to newer products. Recently Microsoft unveiled Kilimanjaro, the next massively scalable version of its SQL Server with a strong BI flavor, while database market number-one Oracle joined forces with Hewlett-Packard to launch its Exadata storage grid.

Quest Software has launched a new online resource, SQLServerPedia, which the company stated is chock-full of free information and education for SQL Server professionals, by SQL Server professionals, including a blog and community-run wiki.

Redlands, California - ArcGIS users now have access to SQL Server 2008. SQL Server 2008, combined with ESRI's powerful geodata management capabilities, will provide users with the tools they need to seamlessly consume, use, and extend location-based analysis for enterprise-scale computing and Web collaboration. The support is the result of a close, multiyear working relationship between ESRI and Microsoft Corp. in the development of the spatial extensions to SQL Server 2008.

Microsoft today previewed the ability to centrally manage applications and resources in the planned upgrade of SQL Server, code-named "Kilimanjaro."
The company introduced the centralized app and system management capability at the annual Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) Conference, being held this week in Seattle. Though PASS is an independent user association, Microsoft typically has a strong presence at its annual conferences because of the large number of SQL Server customers and partners that attend.
