    I'm looking for an app that I can use to practice at home.  I don't mind paying for it.

    Got Excel?  It can connect to SQL Server.

    Hi,

    In adition to what has written above, you can download .Net Express edition from here http://www.microsoft.com/express/ to build small application connecting to SQL Server
