Know anything about this error? 17827 - ...failure while attempting to encrypt a password

In the middle of the night we received the following error on one of our 64bit 2005 servers; probably from a batch process.

Error: 17827, Severity: 20, State: 1.

There was a failure while attempting to encrypt a password. The connection has been closed.

Any idea what this means. I found little while doing a Google search.

One of our customer saw this after installing SP2 , did it happen to you by any chance ?

This message is listed in MSDN site in list of error number but no clue on resolution as you are aware.

Some more digging required hang in there Dave.

Sorry for the delay in my response. I just got back from vacation. Now I have to filter through 1,900+ emails after one week (about 1/2 MOM and SQL alerts).

SP2 has been on the server since it was initially configured. The error has not returned, but I am still puzzled as to why it happened and what it means.

I'm back guys, it has been hectic during June .. .my gig at Tech-ed and coming work busy for 2 weeks..

Anyway coming to the problem, Dave, can you check how many user connections during this error is generated and also find out what kind of processes are running. Running DBCC MEMORYSTATUS is good to get how memory is handling.

Hi Satya. How did Tech-Ed go?

There were 293 connections approximately one minute before the error occurred. I don't see any problems in MEMORYSTATUS output, but perhaps I am missing something. The server is 64-bit with 32GB of memory. It is a combined Test and Development server running three instances of SQL Server. One instance has a max memory of 18GB, the second is 5GB and the third is 5GB. That leaves 4GB for the OS. Since this is 64bit isn't the AWE info reported by MEMORYSTATUS meaningless?

Thanks Guys.

Speaking at Tech-ed has been a good experience, not to mention about learning from other PRofessionals too. My dream come true....

Hmm, the problem seems to be peculiar to me and the server is shared between the instances it may be obvious that this instnace might be suffering from the memory pressure while processing that batch job (what you referred earlier). Still I think there is a slight chance of reoccuring the same problem and may not be at the same point of time, better to watch and capture the system information with sQLDIAG for further assesment.

I presume you may have the support contract with MS CSS, if so better to knock their door for further assesment, before anything serious appears.

Nothing yet. We decided to take a "wait and see" approach. If it happens a second time we will contact MS, but so far there has been no reoccurance. We ended up diverting resources to troubleshoot cluster errors 1122 and 1123, which a MS doc said was nothing to worry about, but we suddenly received a large number. Turned out to be somehow related to QOS being turned on at the network level. CISCO is still not sure why it produced the cluster and MOM errors, but we shut it off and all is well. But that's another topic for another post. :)

I will keep you posted if 17827 pops up again.
