While trying to provide access to a user to run xp_cmdshell, I am facing errors. Here's what i did and the error i got...

Note: xp_cmdshell is enabled in sp_configure

Step 1: When the user runs xp_cmdshell, the error is...
"The xp_cmdshell proxy account information cannot be retrieved or is invalid. Verify that the '##xp_cmdshell_proxy_account##' credential exists and contains valid information."

Step 2: So I jumped in to create a proxy account
    "EXECsp_xp_cmdshell_proxy_account'domain\user','password'" and got an error...
    "
An error occurred during the execution of sp_xp_cmdshell_proxy_account. Possible reasons: the provided account was invalid or the '##xp_cmdshell_proxy_account##' credential could not be created. Error code: '5'.
    "
    Step 3: I tried creating a credential
    "CREATECREDENTIAL ##XP_CMDSHELL_PROXY_CERT## WITHIDENTITY='domain\user',SECRET='password'"
    and i got an error...
"User does not have permission to perform this action."

I could create a credential with a name "XP_CMDSHELL_PROXY_CERT", but that doesn't help here. I am part of the sysadmin fixed server role. Not sure why i could not create a server credential. Any help pls?
