    Hi,
I'm kind of a newbie, but if I have a 2-node cluster set up as active-passive. Is there a way to create non-named instance databases? So in this case I have two virtual server-names
    SQL1
    SQL2
Can I have databases on SQL1 and SQL2 without creating named instances?
    SQL1InstanceName; SQL2InstanceName to be just SQL1 and SQL2?

You are saying active/passive which means there will be only one sql instance not two so yes you can create one default instance when you create active/passive cluster.
You can't create two default instance when you create two node cluster active/active (multi instance) cluster becasue name have to be unique...
    SQL1Instance1 and SQL2
    SQL1 and SQL2instance2
    SQL1instance1 and SQL2instance2
