In the hundreds of different organisations that I have been involved with since Data Dude was first released there are only a handful that are using Visual Studio Team System VSTS Database Edition (aka Data Dude). One of the main problems that is stopping adoption of the product is that the cost is so prohibitive. The cost for Data Dude is the same as any of the other SKUs in the Visual Studio Team Suite of products. Although Data Dude provides features to assist with application lifecycle management and collaboration, most DBAs see the product as little more than a data and schema comparison tool. As a result most DBAs look at the third-party products that are available for data and schema comparison that are available for less than a tenth of the price.
Well it appears that Microsoft have received the message that cost was one of the biggest prohibiting features. In what is being touted as a move to increase integration across the lifecycle, Microsoft has announced that Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) 2010 will provide a unified VSTS Development and Database product. In other words Data Dude will now be included in the development SKU and vice versa. Will this change in licensing mean that you will start using the next version of Data Dude?
