    HI,
SQL Server 2005 introduced the concept of Database Mirroring, i have tested it and it is great, BUT, for the mirror you need 1 Server Server (MAIN) + 1 BACKUP Server + 1 Witness Server.
Does anybody have an idea on the licensing mode for that, Do we need to buy 3 Server licence????[?]

You have to wait until the fine product comes out from BETA, as of now Database Mirroring is not introduced until next year in SQL 2005.

I had heard that the witness could be SQL Express, so you could make out there. Yes, you should still have seperate hardware to do it right, but at least the license would be free. You can also monitor multiple mirrors with the same witness. As Satya says, we won't be sure about for some time...

You don't have to have a witness server, but you will need licenses for the SQL Servers you install (no shock there).

Yes you can use SQL Express as a witness server and you need only license for the primary server and if you use secondary server for reporting purpose then license is required here, otherwise it is not required. For witness server no need to pay as it is only a SQL instance sitting like duck.[<img src='/community/emoticons/emotion-1.gif' alt=':)' />].<br /><br /><hr noshade size="1"><b>Satya SKJ</b><br />Contributing Editor & Forums Moderator<br /<a target="_blank" href=http://www.SQL-Server-Performance.Com>http://www.SQL-Server-Performance.Com</a><br /><center><font color="teal"><font size="1">This posting is provided “AS IS” with no rights for the sake of <i>knowledge sharing.</i></font id="size1"></font id="teal"></center>
