I actually tried to run the DBCC showcontig on a table which has huge amount of data. I was waiting for around 5 minutes. SO, I went in to Activity monitor and killed the process. And I had this message in the result window. What does this mean ? Is it just because I killed the process (or) is there any erros in the Table.? We have SQL 2000 SP4. The table size was around 43Gb and row count was around 25 Million.
    Below is the message :
    Msg 8966, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Could not read and latch page (1:1671232) with latch type SH. Latch failed.
    Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

In my opinion the message is because you kill DBCC.
I suggest to run DBCC checkdb now, before any other action.

You are risking your database consistency by killing such DBCC processes, it is a best practice to run such DBCC statement during low traffic on the database as per the documentation (BOL) it will have locks in order to get correct information, follow what Luis suggested during quiet period on the database and also check whether any hard ware issues on thE server.
