Dual core with 2 cpu vs quad core with 1 CPU

Hi

We are currently planning to buy a new Dell server for SQL 2005 to host our transactional datbases and are debating whether we should use a dual core with a 2-CPU server or a quad core with 1-CPU server. What are the advantages or disadvantages with each?

Any input on this is very much appreciated.

Currently, from a licensing standpoint, it is less expensive to user fewer sockets and more cores, as current SQL Server licensing is based on sockets, not cores. This might change in the future.
