The goal to England has been given by Paraguay, so nothing gr8 about England performance though.

What - no comments on the Netherlands v. Serbia & Montenegro?

Well, one might argue that the state of Serbia & Montenegro no longer exists, so it was only logical that they could not score.

Other than that, it's always good to win the first game of the group phase!

Congrats Adriaan,
Its really a good feeling to start on the series on winning note.
Robbenno played superbly.

But this world cup will be at high pressure when it will arrive to knock out stages really.

And good for us, because the last game in group C is Argentina - Netherlands so both have good chances to clasify.

It will be a match to remember ...

We had our revenge for the 74 final against Germany in the European Championships of 88 - and I vividly remember there was a much bigger euphoria for that semi-final win in 88 than the joy of winning the final against Russia.

So perhaps now it is time to get our revenge for the 78 final ...

... but I'm probably forgetting an earlier revenge match somewhere down the line!

Congratulations Adriaan. The country I am citizen of got smaller again. Now, I may become citizen of both parts (and Czech too) because of my Montenegrian roots.

Anyway, I am not happy with the loss, but I kind of expected it.

After two wins, Germany is guaranteed to be through to the next round. This means MORE football madness.
30. FrankKalis Moderator

Yes, indeed. I didn't watch the game. However, I knew immediately that Germany scored a goal. The whole neighborhood broke loose and shouted. You know what I really "fear" is that the German team keep on winning.

Yep, the Aussies fought hard, but were beaten on the day...i think the 2-0 score line was a bit flattering to Brazil, but a draw with Croatia will get us through now!

It is really amazing in Australia at the moment...soccer (or football []) is played by lots of children, but has never been a very popular spectator sport. Then we make it to the world cup for the first time in 30 years and Australia has gone soccer mad (myself included to some extent)!! yes,
and Ghana vs USA was a surprise to me.
Ghana has made it to last 16.
but i think they will not go far as their second round match is with Legendary Brazil.
Yesturday Ronaldo equalled the record of Muller of 14 goals which is good for Brasil.

Argentina weren't terribly convincing against the Netherlands.

Neither were the Netherlands terribly convincing against Argentina, but we more or less expected to lose the game!
62. ranjitjain New Member

This is because Argentina had rested most of their class A players on that eve.
They were not attacking as they were before and also in half time their stars who were playing were substituted.
But still Argentina will be a good bet though
63. Adriaan New Member

The Netherlands too kept a lot of players on the bench ...

... because they were already booked once and if they would get a second booking, they would be suspended for the next match - coincidentally the first knock-out round. Whereas players with only one booking in the first round would start the rest of the tournament with a clean slate.

Riquelme did his best, but didn't same to be able to break through the defence - especially against "2nd choice" defender Boulahrouz.

Van Nistelrooy, who didn't do well at all in any of the 3 games, appears to have lost his 1st choice status.

No Portuguese members here, I guess?

What a shameful game - on both sides, Portugal and the Netherlands. There have been suggestions in the Dutch press that Portugal should not be allowed into the next round either.
72. thomas New Member

The referee was terrible. Some of the performances of the referees have been terrible. Graham Poll (English ref) gave a Croat player 3 yellow cards in the game against Australia.

Let's hope the English give the Portugese a walloping on behalf of the Netherlands in the QFs.
73. Adriaan New Member

Thomas, that would be beyond the call of duty - but all the best to England!

Italy didn't really score - one of their players did a Schwalbe in the last minute and they were awarded a penalty kick. Big mistake by the referee - he should know well that Italians always go for Schwalben in the dying seconds.

that last minute penalty to Italy sure was a shame!! I was sitting up at 3am watching the game and it was such a disappointment!!! But really, Australia should have scored earlier- we had an extra played for 30mins and didnt capitalise...still, i think we should have won the match!

I think the major setback for australia was that Herry Quiell was injured and was not playing because rest all players were not good finishers in my opinion.

Congrats Germany and Frank.
I think it is really difficult to beat Germany in Penalties.
Germany knew this fact and thats why even in extra time they were on defensive move.
Also Penlaty is the Last thing England will want against Germany.
The way Germany Played their Penalties against Argentina was supereb.
They were so confident especially borowski and Podolski.
I liked Borowski's kick. It went like bullet without noise.
They all were so calm and patient while taking thier kick.
Cambiasso and payala were really feeling pressure.

All the above it was a real thrilling game.

I feel, Germany was little sloppy in the first half, but turned on the heat in the last minutes of the game. Argentina was little unlucky to have missed the berth to semifinal

Well i feel Germany have liftedd their game so well because before the world cup they were not favourates and now they are.
They are really strong in self belief now.

But the same is across France.
They have lifted themselves too much.
After their two round matches they were struggling to find place in top 16.

yes, Germany may not have been in final 32 if they are not the Hosts. however, they are on rising. Germany did same in 2002. They palyed well when matters
