How long will a connection stay in SQL server when the applicationapplication server has dropped or been rebooted? Is their a configuration setting to force the connection to close?

The application has dropped or sql server was rebooted?.

If you kill some application, may be some user still connected doing something until finish his task.

Now if you down sql server, there is not posible connection between user and database.
So, can you explain a litle more?.

We have an issue going on where we have applications connecting to the sql server via a webapp server and the connections continue to climb. The app team states that they are getting an exception, they're waiting for connections to the database. The connection count has gone up dramatically. But we don't see any active connections from the webapp server though some work is still being done as I can see through profiler. User connections is set to 0, so it's unlimited. So the questions are:
    1. When will these connections drop off connection?
    2. There are 4 web servers with the connection pool set to 50. Any idea why the connection count gets to 280.

What is the edition of SQL Server used here?
In general it is better to disconnect the connection once the task is finished, this can be achieve from the code used by the application or if it is not possible to change such code then you could do an adhoc job to disconnect idle connections for more than certain time.
