Is there a difference in performance, when inserting a record, between two tables with identitical fields, except for an identity field. I presume that it would take longer to insert a record in a table with an identity field, since it has to find the last record inserted.

I'd appreciate any comments on the matter, if possible the amount of difference.
    Thanks in advance

It doesn't have to find the last record inserted. It has last identity value used for specific column stored internaly, so it just increment internal counter and use it as a value for identity column.

as hinted at by mmarovic, there is no difference in performance
