When you try to register for the first time with EM you have to write those names. Example: Serverinstance1, Serverinstance2. I suppose you are using the wizard in EM. You can try registering the default instance which will be the servername, if you have tried that already then ensure the SQL Server services for that instance are started successfully. OSQL -L is to know about available SQL instances on the network.
