    That's a really big question - that's why this site is called SQL-Server-Performance.com

    Go to the start page of the site http://www.sql-server-performance.com/default.asp), and check the Articles section - there are two major ones on "auditing" performance that give you a good start.

    Then when you have specific questions, you post here in the forums.

    I believe Adriaan has given you big solution with as simple as reply you need in this regard, improving performance is not a quick solution you can achieve.

    Performance tuning tools like in SQL 2005 that wasn't available on past versions of SQL Server, when tuning was regarded as a black art. An index here, a few design changes there, toss in some query hints, do a quick SQL optimization and give you satisfaction of that you had a tuned database.
