We are using SQL Server 2000 SP3 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server 2000 SP3. Hardware is a cluster with two servers: Compaq Proliant DL580 with external storage device Compaq MSL 1000(Raid 5). Since last week we encountered server become very slow on and off (about 5 times) and manually switch over to another cluster node. After switch over to another cluster, become normal.Normally, our CPU usage is 10 to 30% on the server. When server slow, CPU usage become 50% and never go down.
We have checked with HP and they said nothing wrong with Hardware. Please advise us how to troubleshoot source of the problem

If I understand correctly, the server has been performing well in the past, but now all of a sudden, it is performing poorly? If this is correct, the first question to ask yourself is "what has changed?" If anything has changed (and you may not be aware of the change yourself) then this is the place to start. For example, are there any new queries running that have not run before.
If nothing has changed, then use System Monitor and Profiler to help you identify the cause of the slow down. There are tips on this site to help you get the most out of these tools.
Also, be sure that you are performing regular index rebuilds and defragging your physical drives.
Without much more detail than what you have provided, it is hard to offer much specific help.
