SQL Server 2005 Query Optimizer

I am seeing a different query plans for some of the stored procedures between my development and production servers. The two servers have the same harware and software configurations, do SQL Server. The databases are almost the same as the development is a recent copy of production. The major differece is of course the number of connections.

I have so far had to add index and/or join hints to several stored procedures to get the production environment to select the optimal plan. This is not the case for my development environment. Once i add these hints the queries run as fast as expected.

I obviously would prefer to have the optimizer select the best plan/ Anyone has any thought on what the cause might be?

    Thanks
