SQL Server Performance

sub string question

    I am new to sql. i am using sql server 2005.I need to use substring function with only two parameter
    substring(text,start) like .dot net
    as of now i saw only function like this
    substring(text,start,length)
    is there any method like this .if not please send user defined funtion which will solve my issue

    Use LEN(text), or a number that will be high enough for "all" situations.
