TDE - Transparent Data Encryption performance

is TDE - Transparent Data Encryption performance good, as they say avoid using assymetric keys and certificates if you want good performance?

In my experience I haven't seen any performance gain when TDE is used and as per the documents: The encryption is highly CPU (central processing unit) intensive as it takes place at the database level. Moreover, it is performed at I/O (input/output).
