What backup software do you use to backup large .bak files to tape?

We use ArcServe to backup database .bak files to tape nightly. This product has worked well, but we have concerns that it will not be able to perform fast enough for large database backups such as 500+ GB. Which leads to my questions.
What backup software do you use for backing up large .bak files to tape and how fast does it perform?

Do you find it beneficial in terms of backup performance to backup a large database to multiple backup files and then backup those files to tape or is there not much of a performance gain to having multiple backup files per database vs. one large backup file?
    Thanks, Dave

Are these backup files compressed? if not try using some 3rd party sqlbackup tools from red-gate.
During tape backup, I suppose a big file backup will be faster compared to several small size; because of frequent open session and reverts during data communication between source and tape drive.

Do you really need to backup that big database every night?
As referred by Deepak REDGATE does fair amount of compression in terms of keeping the size to managable and have the important task complete every night, we used Quest litespeed and compared with SQLBackup where the outcome was performance and accessibility is far better in SQLBackup than the other product.
Also if possible or if it is already on the database split into multiple data files (Primary, secondary, data and so on) then simply perform the files/filegroup backup strategy by taking care of important part of data.
