Windows 2003 Server 32Bit RETAIL BOX I need to install MSSQL 2000. We have 20 workstations that will be randomly accesing MSSQL at any given perion of time during the work day. The software I am running is a contact management/accounting/invoicing (basically all-in-one)software.
Installation recommends:
Install Application on dedicated application server.
Install Data on a dedicated MSSQL server.
The program uses MSSQL 2000 and has:
System Data File
System Log File
(My Company) Data File
(My Company) Log File Which server is the best server to install MSSQL as and act as a dedicated MSSQL Server? Which server can be my Primary Domain Controller and Application Server? How would you recommend installing MSSQL 2000, how many partitions to make, what raid configurations to use, where to install the os, and how to seperate or place tempdb, data files, log files for best performance? (Im a hardware guy and I built these over-kill servers out of spare parts from gutted machines. When it comes to software I am pretty good usually, but I like to see what the pros would do.)
the single athlon will probably perform better than 2 x PIII 1GHz I am not fond of SATA drives in a prod DB server
stick with SCSI and SAS
I am fan of 64 bit Athlon processors. So I recommend the same as joechang. Make sure you set up your hard drive configuration with proper fault tolerance and best read/write performance you can get.

Thank you for the advice. I have chosen the following setup. Before I go through with the installation, let me know if this configuration would give me excellant performance. I will use SERVER 2 as my dedicated MSSQL Server. I will configure the hardrives as follows: Hard Drive 1 Western Digital 80G 7200RPM 8MB SATARaid
Hard Drive 2Western Digital 80G 7200RPM 8MB SATA1
Partition 1 – System Data File
Hard Drive 3 Western Digital 80G 7200RPM 8MB SATARaid
Hard Drive 4 Western Digital 80G 7200RPM 8MB SATA1
Partition 1 – (Company) Data File
Hard Drive 5 Western Digital 200G 7200RPM 8MB SATA Raid
Hard Drive 6 Western Digital 200G 7200RPM 8MB SATA1
Partition 1 – tempdb
Partition 2 – All Backup Files
Partition 3 – Recovery Software Storage <copy of all software stored on Fat16 partition>
Hard Drive 7 Western Digital 200G 7200RPM 8MB SATA Raid
Hard Drive 8 Western Digital 200G 7200RPM 8MB SATA 1
Partition 1 – Operating System (1)
Partition 2 – Program Files (1)
Partition 3 – Emergency Pagefile (2)
Hard Drive 9 Western Digital 200G 7200RPM 8MB IDE ATA 100Raid
Hard Drive 10 Western Digital 200G 7200RPM 8MB IDE ATA 1001
Partition 1 – Pagefile (1)
Partition 2 – Emergency Operating system (2) <Dual Boot System>
Partition 3 – Emergancy Program Files (2) I have an extra PCI Express SATA Raid Card so I have added the following:
External HD Case
Hard Drive 11 Western Digital 36G 10000RPM 16MB SATARaid
Hard Drive 12 Western Digital 36G 10000RPM 16MB SATA1
Partition 1 – System Log File
Hard Drive 11 Western Digital 36G 10000RPM 16MB SATARaid
Hard Drive 12 Western Digital 36G 10000RPM 16MB SATA1
Partition 1 – (Company Log File) I designed this machine with a dual boot just incase of a Failed OS/file corruption or Virus. Everything that has a (2) next to it would be active if the Emergency OS was booted.
Any feedback on this configuration would be greatly appreciated. This will take me a while and I don’t want to have to do it over again if I could do it right the first time.
Sorry I made a description error on the last Mirror. The second Hard Drive pair 11, 12 should be 13 and 14. Total of 14 disks to this server.
