Active Directory and Authentication

I’m not familiar with Active Directory. I just know that you can register a SQL Server in Active Directory. The information regarding Active Directory in BOL is very limited. I’m interested in how Active Directory relates to (or affects) a SQL Server 2000 using Windows Authentication. Thanks.
