Alerts, Thresholds & Database Mail

Hi All, Actually i m new in sql server administration. And i m in the process of building our production box with sql server 2005. ( win 2003 std ) Can anybody plz tell me , what all the "Alerts" and their ‘Thresholds’ i have to configure on my server, so that those can be emailed (or) paged. And does anybody know like any link, which gives step by step instruction for configuring Database mail with explanations.
