Attaching dbs from remote to local
I have few databases in mdf and ldf on a remote server.now i want to attach these dbs in my machine via EM ..can it be possible.i m using vncon for accessing file remotely.I dont want to copy these database folder from remote server to my machine and then attach it, as it will consume my systems memory uselessly. The total size of these databases is 7 Gb approx..Further the remote system has no SQL server .Only the mdf and ldf are arranged in suitable folder and kept.SQL Server won’t let you, and with good reason. Read up on SQL Server basics.
As per ur Question, u want SQLserver in ur machine and database in remote server which is not possible.
you have to copy the files to desired locations in ur machine and reattach .
Copyin through network share is common practice,or transportable media, disk etc… Rajiv

(1) Bringing the database online by attaching MDF and LDF files does consume system memory, but look here – this is a database server, so there is software running in memory that will provide the data to a client application that puts in a request for data. What are you expecting?(2) In order to improve performance, the server software very cleverly uses system memory to cache oft-requested data. If you think that’s a waste of system resources then I’m afraid you’re not getting any of this anyway.
(3) You’re confusing volatile memory with disk space.
(4) I’m having trouble understanding your angle on all this.

Hi aaronsandy. I don’t want to offend you, but it is obvious that you are trying to manage software you don’t have basic understanding about. The purpose of this message board is knowledge share, which in most cases means more experienced/knowledgeable users help one who is not at that level yet. However, before trying to accomplish anything mssql server related and posting question about it, try to read and understand mssql server basics. Books on-line is great source of information but you may need some kind of beginners guide first. Can anyone recommend a good introductory guide, article or training material?

Thanks Frank, polite seems to be your middle finger name. And "Read The FAQ ‘n Manual" is certainly one to remember.
The equivalent in Dutch for the F word sounds roughly the same as the English "cut", so I help out colleagues who use the term by adding "and paste".

Right. But the one I am talking about isn’t in that list, is it? I mean, polite form – there’s no point. Sometimes you have to tell it like it is! Tom Pullen

Play nice guys…. In addition to the books online I suggest the following….

http://www.w3schools.com/sql/sql_intro.asp
http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/tutorials/sql/index.php3 I’m sure Frank will tuck in more relevant links. Aaron, do not mis-understand what was referred by other peers and it saves your time and interest in gaining knowledge in SQL Server and this forum is always available to help you out.

I don’t think this qualifies as one of Dr Phil’s "life changing moments", but I’m happy for you. Ah, such joy one can bring into one another’s heart.[xx(]

I agree that aarosandy is new and he shld read books online, but whats wrong if he post
his qs on this message board. he has not forced anyone to ans him.
may be he must have found easier posting than finding any ans in books.
So by this way he is sharing his knowledge too.

aarosandy, ur problem what ive understood can be overcome by mapping the network drive where the mdf file is located

I respect you as English language expert, at least from my point of view. Not having information about originator’s country and reading original post I came up to conclusion that he is not native english speaker. I may be wrong however.

Formally nothing wrong. I just tried to really help him instead of answering concrete question. My point was to discourage him from managing production sql server before he gains basic undersanding about it. Also from his qusetions I came up to conclusion that he asks for tips about "how to" details without effort to understand rdbms first, which is not good approach IMO. To summarize: Better read first, then ask what you don’t understand.
Anyway, I also don’t want to comment on this topic anymore. You are right that I don’t have to answer every question and it is not my job to comment about one who asked, his knowledge and his motives.

I think aarosandy understands that he shld read book first and he shld ask only those which he dont get in his head properly. But many people have posted same messages to him still he doent want to read books. So for this comment also we cant force him.
