Backup Solution Required

Hello Guys I have 3 databases running on my MS-SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition. The total size of 3 Databases are as follows: 27 GB, 6 GB and 1 GB. Currently I have simple recovery model and made a backup on daily basis through maintenance plan. I am saving these backups on Harddisk and since due to HDD space limitation I cannot have more than 1 day backup. Now I am planning to purchase the Tape Library (or any other reliable) backup solution for my databases so that i should make the proper backup of the system with transaction logs. If one can advise the better and reliable backup solution, I will be highly appreciable for that. Also solution should not effect the performance of database during the backup process. Thanks and Regards Mansoor
You really need to buy disks and do backup-to-disk, then copy to tape if you can. This gives you faster recovery time and is more reliable. It’s not a very big system. You might want to look at a single tape drive to attach to the SQL Server. You could put the disk backups on SAN, an enclosure, or on different disks on the server. Never store the backups on the same drives as the DB of course. MeanOldDBA

If you can buy another server and place as a Disaster Recovery server, you can store the backups and transaction logs from the primary server by the way of using Log shipping. This way you can have warm-standby for your databases and firm backup solution. Backup a database will not affect the performance until unless the disk drives are not capable to write backup to the disk file.http://www.sql-server-performance.com/backup_restore_tuning.asp fyi.
