Critical Error. No reason

Today in the morning when I got to my workplace I noticed through EM that one of the our Prod SQL servers doesn’t work. I have tried to connect to it remotly but with no success. Then I have tried to ping it – failed again. The only way to bring it back was to go to the place where it resides and manually reset it. It was hanged After restarting it works normal. I went through SQL Server and Windows Server 2003 event logs – nothing! I hadn’t found any event that could explain me what has happen last night. In logs all was OK. Only in my e-mail I found a message from our MOM server: Severity: Critical Error Status: New Source: EventLog Name: Erorsecurity Description: The previous system shutdown at 19:50:10 on 2005.07.06 was unexpected. Domain: dom1 Agent: Server_name Time: 7/7/2005 08:15:35 We have Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SQL server 2000 ent SP3 Does anyone experienced something like that?

unexpected shutdown means that there was no shutdown command, like when you
hit the reset switch.
So – check your hardware – motherboard, overheating and so on.

Hi zvidas,<br />Have you patched up your server with latest release patches !?<br />It could be the problem of Sasser / Buffer Overrun… it will shutdown the system un expectingly and microsoft has release a patch for it , refer <br /><br /><a href=’http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308035′ target=’_blank’ title=’http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308035′<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308035>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308035</a></a><a href=’http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/rpc/rpc/rpc_call_attributes.asp’ target=’_blank’ title=’http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/rpc/rpc/rpc_call_attributes.asp'<a target="_blank" href=http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/rpc/rpc/rpc_call_attributes.asp>http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/rpc/rpc/rpc_call_attributes.asp</a></a><br /><br /><b>And download and install the patch for the same from </b> :<br /><br /><font color="red"><b><a href=’http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824146′ target=’_blank’ title=’http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824146′<a target="_blank" href=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824146>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824146</a></a></b></font id="red"><br /><br />[<img src=’/community/emoticons/emotion-1.gif’ alt=’:)‘ />]<br />Regards.<br /><br />hsGoswami<br />[email protected]
Thank you both for replies. I see that most explanations about what had happened refer to hardware configuration. It’s a little bit strange because this and other 5 servers with the same hardware configuration and the same drivers work fine about six months. I think it would be the best practice to put an eye on this server and watch what will be next
Do you have any monitoring software on these boxes? Satya SKJ

I believe Hemant has a valid opinion to cross-check what is referred above. Satya SKJ
