Doubts in indexing

I have got some doubts in indexing I am given a task to join a front end with our database.I had done it.
But the data retrieval was very slow,Some of my friends gave me an idea of indexing
I dont know much of doing indexing.So can anybody help me out in sorting out this

You can even go for ITW suggestions.
ITW tells you the index to create on which column going to be fruitful.
