Enterprise Manager Speed Question

I have SQL 2000 client tools on my PC (XP), which I use to administrator 5 SQL servers. Two days ago Enterprise Manager started taking forever to open any database on any server on my machine. Once I select a database to check current activity or the agent jobs, it can take up to 5 minutes to open. Of course I have tried running this as the only program open, rebooting, uninstalled/reinstalled SQL client tools. There was only one change that corresponded timewise with the problem, I installed a Universe ODBC driver on my machine. I’ve tried removing the driver. I have tried to recreate this problem on other XP PCs, but it seems to happen just on my machine. There is no problem accessing the databases from other clients, or on the servers. Has this happened to anyone? I do not see anything unusual in Task Manager. We have very good virus protection here, regardless I ran ad-aware, which found 5 things that I could delete. I am not sure what else to check. I keep the machine defragged. If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it! Meanwhile I am making sure that my stuff is backed up, just in case the machine needs to be rebuilt. Thanks all!!

How about network nic in your pc?. Run Monitor Profiler in PC with network events.

Thanks, Luis… It is something to try next. I neglected to say that I am seeing no visible speed issues other than this. Query Analyzer runs normally, no speed issues at all. I know that potentially this is not a SQL question, but since it is only apparent in EM, I thought I’d ask. You never know where those little gems of wisdom will turn up!! Karen Token SQL Goddess

Luis, do you mean that I should clean out all my temporary files? Thanks, Karen Token SQL Goddess

Yes. Not with EM but with 3rd app, I found more performance after clean out temp files.

Right shot by Luis, and ensure to apply latest service pack which would resolve the issue.
I mean service pack for windows & SQL as well. Satya SKJ

I would just download and reinstall the latest MDAC. See if that fixes your issue. You do want to always be upgraded on the service packs of course. If that doesn’t work though, pull the NIC and replace it. NIC cards are cheap. MeanOldDBA

Thanks for the input! It’s not the NIC, tried another one. I thought perhaps that it was the Universe ODBC driver upgrade causing the problem (it was the only change on my laptop), but uninstalling that did not improve things. I can try an MDAC upgrade when I get a chance…. If I find a resolution I will complete this thread.<br /><br />Thanks everso!!<br /><br />Token SQL Goddess<br />
