How to rename an instance server

Hello, I need to rename the instance name for sql server. Suppose if the old SQL servername is abcx , I need to rename to abcy. How it can be done..Please advice me.

No. You cannot change instance names. You choose the instance name during the installation and you can only change it by uninstalling the existing instance and reinstalling a new instance of SQL Server 2000 with a new instance name. Satya SKJ

I had a issue some time back. I did this Install another instance
Import all the obejcts to new instance
Remove the unwanted instance I don’t think you have other option than this
Yes and I believe it is the better option, as it plays with the instance/server level and you have only renaming upto the level of databases. Satya SKJ
