In SQL 2005 or in 2000. I think best thing would be to search here on sql-server-performance.com for articles on indexing and read more about indexing in BOL.
Indexing is really a very broad topic.
There are tools like ITW which can suggest you to have indexes but even to understand and to apply those indexes, you need to have proper background about indexes in SQL Server
Sorry, still very much in the SQL Server 2000 world. I meant the "Database Tuning Advisor". —
