Is it safe to upgrade OS without testing?

I have always upgraded the OS on test servers before upgrading on production. We are in the process of upgrading hardware for a production server and are considering installing Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition vs. what previously existed on the server, Windows 2000 Standard Edition. How much of a risk would this present? I’m leaning towards not changing the OS until we have a chance to upgrade the test servers first. Dave

I did that a couple of times and no problem. Luis Martin

I wouldn’t upgrade until I do it on the test servers. Make sure there are no oddities with your applications. It’s production, so better safe than sorry. This is especially true when you try explaining why things are broke and you didn’t think testing was important. We found a documented issue with Linked servers on Windows Server 2003 (Q329332). This was enough reason for us to test first. Thanks, Dave
