Issues connecting through Management Studio

I have SQL Server Express 2005 and am having some weird problems. If I start up my computer and open up my management studio, it connects and everything’s fine. But if I wait around for 10 minutes and check my e-mail or something first, it will not connect. I’ve had to restart my computer to connect to my database.
Also, I’ve had an update that has been failing to install for months now. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling SQL server and tried upgrading to 2008, but nothing has seemed to help.
Has anyone else ran into this before? It’s very annoying. Thanks!

Can you run sql configuration manager and check tcp ip setting in your machine at startup of you machine.
try to setup static port (dynamic is the default)
Do you switch to other network (or vpn) in case checking e-mail.
