Management Studio Closes When Connecting to Server

Two of four desktop installations of SQL 2005 Tools and BOL have been unsuccessful with SQL Server Management Studio closing down when I try to connect to a server. The PCs are Windows XP with Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express. Both times I was prompted that an older version of SQL Server was detected, which appeared to be a reference to SQL Server 2005 Express since no other version existed on the PCs. After applying SQL 2005 SP1 and rebooting the PC I opened Management Studio and tried to connect to a server. As soon as I hit enter the Studio closes. Does anyone know of any bugs like what I described? Thanks, Dave
Have you checked or observed any warnings or errors during and after the install of SQL 2005 tools, I have had similar issue and to resolve this I have stopped Anti-virus & anti-spyware for a while by disconnecting from network to install and it succeeded. Check whether any dump or exception errors are generated during this behaviour or can reproduce similar issues on another machine? Satya SKJ

It turns out our Cisco Security Agent (CSA) was blocking the application and not reporting this to the Event Viewer log. A rule has been written for CSA to not block the application. Is it common for an installation of the SQL 2005 tools and SP1 to take approximately 35 minutes to complete or should I be looking at other issues such as our virus software slowing down the installation? Thanks, Dave
With the Anti virus & Anti spyware the installation is slow as I have observed in my machine, but on the work place the installation is even far slow than usual. SO I think you need not worry about amount of time it is taking to install. Satya SKJ

I’ll make sure I bring a good book with me to occupy my time for the next install <img src=’/community/emoticons/emotion-1.gif’ alt=’:)‘ />
