Maxtor Atlas 15K II SAS 36GB vs 73GB

Not being too wise about HD architecture, i was wondering if there was a considerable performance difference between the Maxtor Atlas 15K II 36GB drive and 73GB drive? We ordered 36GB drives from our vendor, and they sent us 73GB drives instead. As happy i am about the price saving, i’m more concerned about the performance. We really need the best performance for our money. Specs seems to indicate that the perforance between both drives are almost identical, only difference i could see are the following: ……………….36GB…..73GB
Heads………….. 2……..4
Platters……….. 1……..2
Avg Read………. 3.0……3.1
Avg Write…….. 3.4……3.5
pwr consumption… 9.2……10.8
Should I keep the 73GB or go with the 36GB? Thanks,

capacity does not have a direct effect on performance
RPM is the most important,
avg seek & sustained transfer rate are the second group however, if you had 18GB of data on a 36 & 72GB disk, and only accessed thay data, then you would get about 10% more random IO out of the 72GB, because the avg seek time is less in any case, a small number of disks cannot support the powerful processors today
i generally recommend 2-4 racks of external disks to provide adequate IO capability more serious application will run with 8 or more racks
Thanks for the reply,

I always feel small when i read posts with people listing 30+ or 50+ drives when we only have about a dozen We’re just a startup, i guess budget will grow with our profits.

XiNull
