MS03-031

Hi all, I understand from Microsoft website that the above
security patch is for the following : Microsoft SQL Server 2000 64 bit (all editions)
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions) SP3
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions) SP3a
Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack 4
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) SP3
Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0
Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 SP4
1. How about servers running on SQL 2000 SP2/SP1 ? and SQL
7 SP3/SP2 ?
2. Are they affected or not ?
3. Is it that they are sill affected but the patches are
only available on top of the latest service packs for SQL
2000 & SQL 7, and to save SQL 7 & SQL 2000 running with
lower Service Packs, we have to apply the latest service
pack and apply the security patch ? Thanks & regards,
.
Earlier versions are affected. You need to install the latest service pack before installing the patch. From the FAQ in MS03-031:
The SQL Server 2000 patch is only available to install on SP3a. What if I am using SP2 or earlier?
Because SQL Server service packs are cumulative, SP3a includes all fixes from previously released Service Pack 1 (SP1), Service Pack 2 (SP2), and Service Pack 3 (SP3). SP3a can be applied to an original installation or to one where SP1, SP2, or SP3 was previously applied. Previous service pack versions are no longer supported. Information on the support lifecycle is available athttp://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx?rdpath=fh;en-us;lifecycle. /Argyle
1)TO get rid of slammer issue if your server/network is exposed to Internet apply SP3a. And rest of the points covered by Argyle. _________
