New setup w/ witness

We are looking at setting our 2005 enterprise box and, Dell 2950 x64 blah blah blah. We are looking at using a HP DL360 as a witness server and have the mirror be a VM running on ESX for failover. I noticed a post that the witness server should be the same OS as the principal and mirror, but cannot find and reference elsewhere. We are looking to run 2003 Server R2 enterprise x64 on the 2950, 2003 Server R2 Standard x86 on the witness server (DL360) and 2003 Server R2 enterprise x86 on the ESX Server. We will have SQL 2005 Enterprise on both the 2950 and ESX box, and SQL 2005 Express on the witness box. Does anyone see any problems with this.

You can use SQLExpress as referred in BOL for witness and no problem at our end using in same scenario. Satya SKJ

I was more concerned with the different OS’s than SQL version. Are you running the same OS on all boxes or can you mix and match?

Can you mention the different version of OS you are inclined to use? We have similar OS, but for witness we have used Win2K where the others has Win2k3. Satya SKJ

We are planning on using Win2K3 R2 64 bit for the principle, Win2k3 R2 32bit for the mirror, and Win2K3 R2 32 bit for the witness server. If you are using Win2k for your witness we should be fine with 2K3 32 bit for ours. Only concern then would be the principle and mirror being 64 bit and 32 bit respectively.

64 bit means this is where I cannot comment being not involved in that type of environment for database mirroring, I would suggest to contact Microsoft support on 64 bit in this case. Satya SKJ
