Overhead for Varchar in SQL 2005

Hi Friends, Anyone have idea what is the overhead of varchar datatype in SQL server 2005. I remember that in SQL server 2000 its 1 or 2 bytes overhead for Varchar. Can you please some light on this overhead & why it is there ? Thanks for your help in advance.

I believe this hasn’t changed. SQL Server still needs this 2 (I think so) bytes in the column offset array as indication at what position within a row each column ends. —
