Physical file updates.

I’m just curious about when SQL 2005 actually writes data back to .mdf and .ldf files. SQL can run for days and the only time the .mdf and .ldf file timestamps get updated is when I reboot the server. This includes the running maintenance plans etc. Not even ‘tempdb’ gets ‘physcally’ updated until I reboot. Thanks. Don.
