Renaming an Instance

Is it possible to rename an instance of SQL Server? I have an application that has been taken off-line and rather than un-install the instance it was in and re-install a new instance for another application I would like to just delete the old user databases and rename the instance. Is this possible and if so how?
One of the KBA refers:
Q: Can I rename an instance of SQL Server 2000 after I have already installed it on the computer? A: No. You cannot change instance names. You choose the instance name during the installation and you can only change it by uninstalling the existing instance and reinstalling a new instance of SQL Server 2000 with a new instance name.
