Server Licensing

OK, I have some questions about licensing of SQL Server 2000. I’m currently with a web host and want drop the monthly expense for having SQL Server 2000 on my web server by investing in my own copy. 1. Is it possible to buy a used version of SQL Server 2000 on EBay and transfer the license to me? Is this legal or allowed by Microsoft? If so, what must I have with it? The box with hologram or is the license and genuine CDs enoug? How do you transfer a license? 2. Can I legal or legitimately buy an OEM version and install on my server? 3. What is SQL Server 2000 Workgroup edition and can I use that on a webserver to serve web pages. I know about the memory and CPU limitations but couldn’t find any info about the usage in a web application. Thanks in advance for your help!
Since we are talking about Licensing, I have a question too which might get addressed here. Larry hope you dont mind me adding a question in your post. We are also planning to have SQL Server 2000 on our web server by investing in our own copy. 1. If we have a Dev, Test and a production environment do we need to buy separate licenses for each? Or is the license required only for the production server? 2. If it is required for both Dev and Test environment are there any schemes which will save cost? 3. Can I have a Standard edition license on Dev and Test while I have an Enterprise edition on Production. 4. Will there be any compatibiity issues when I make changes to my DB on standard edition and apply it on an Enterprise edition? 5. Finally, can I take a backup from a 2000 Standard edition and restore it on a 2000 Enterprise edition without having to test? Or would it change things because it is Standard and Enterprise? Larry, I’m not sure, but I hope this might be useful information for you too if you are planning on having your own DB Server. regards
Praveen
As far as i know
you can install developer edition on dev and enterprise edition on production. There are no compatibility issues regarding the edition. You can make dbs and apply changes on any environment irrespective of dev or ent edition. The same applies while restoring of DB from one server to another irrespective of 2000 dev or ent editions. The diffence is only remains in few additional features between dev and enterprise editions

When it comes to the licensing then make sure to contact the vendor whatsoever edition you plan to deploy. Satya SKJ

hmmm… didn’t get my question answered though… my thread was hijacked! <img src=’/community/emoticons/emotion-1.gif’ alt=’:)‘ /><br /><br />How can a license be transferred from one person to another. If I buy a copy from a company that goes out of business, how can I transfer the license to me?<br /><br />Thanks!<br />Larry
I would probably contact MS directly. There you’ll get first hand information that should be reliable.
Perhaps you’ll find the answer here:http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/default.mspx
or here

True you need to EULA conditions whether the license can be transferable, as I said it is always ideal to contact vendor in this case. Satya SKJ
