SQL 2005

Hello, Does anyone know if 2005 is an upgrade to 2000? Am I able to install over 2000 and not have to change settings and be wary that things won;t work, or do I have to backup the DB, uninstall 2000 and then install 2005 and restore the DB? Also, is this an upgrade, or a whole new software package? Thanks.
You can’t install 2005 Beta 1(I don’t know beta2) on SQL 2000.
I try before and loose all 2000.

It’s a whole new software package. There are some fundamental architecture changes in 2005. It has .NET CLR integration. The security and "system" model has been changed. It’s had tons of features added. You can install 2005 Beta2 with 2000. I would’t recommend it though until the next BETA. If you have an MSDN subscription, you can download the Virtual Server beta and install it on there. That’s how I run it; and it’s extremely stable. I love it. MeanOldDBA

As the SQL2K5 is still in Beta its better to wait until release of first official version which is expected next summer. For more information on SQL2K5 review other posts in this forum section. To answer your query about differences between 2K & 2K5 refer to this threadhttp://www.sql-server-performance.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5254 for information.

The changes in the article just mention about the Batch Compilation, Recompilation and Plan Caching changes in 2005. Not all the changes are covered. For more referhttp://www.microsoft.com/sql/2005/ HTH. Gaurav
