SQL 2005 Clustering without a Domain?

Hello All, I am a Linux/Load Balancer guy for my Employer. I am migrating our DOTCOM stuff to a new Hardware Load Balanced enviroment. Seeing how DOTCOM is going to exist as a seperate entity from Corp as well as being a mix of Linux and Win2K3. Do I have to have an Active Directory Domain to build a high availibility cluster with SQL 2005?? Thx for any info Eric
In their setup information for SQL Server 2005 clustering, Microsoft states that you must have an Active Directory Domain and an available DNS server. I have not heard of any exceptions to this, nor have I tried building a 2005 cluster without a domain or DNS server. —————————–

Yeah thats what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation Eric
I don’t think even this was possible in SQL 2000 time, without a domain how it is possible to perform the clustering & load balancing. It is definetly a different approach in Linux and other Operating systems. Satya SKJ

Even in SQL2000, this was not possible. The reason for this is that the cluster service needs to run under the security context of an account that is the same on both machines. To make this secure, you need a domain.
Hello, I was wondering if there’s been any update or thoughts on this string. Any sites that offer work-arounds (like somehow getting the same windows user ID on teh two boxes or something like that?). Alternatively, any thoughts on what the right way to add a domain to the following in order to achieve clustering would be? We have isolated for one client: 1 webserver and want to have a 2 node DB cluster. (eventually adding a second WebServer and a Hardware load-balancing to the web-servers). This is at a third-party hosting facility, and all the boxes right now are just stand-alone with workgroups. Thanks for your thoughts and help and any ideas are appreciated adn welcome.
