SQL 2K SP2 patch

Hi, I have a new SQL Server 2k database server & i wanted to apply the sp2 patch, can any one plzz tell me any special suggestion to be taken care, apart from backing up the system databases & installing the patches by stopping the services. Thanks Bhushan
Why are you applying the sp2 and not the sp3? Bambola.

Because the vendor currently has sp2 & will take around a month to get sp3/sp3a, also i know sp3 is avilable on the net for download, but currently i would install the one i have readly available & later would go for sp3 (maybe a year later) as we are about to go live in a couple of days. Even sp2 iam installing now because i do not want to break the replication atleast for a year. Thanks Bhushan
ANytime if you’re apply SP then its better to take full backups for all the databases including system. In general there are no issues, but refer thru SQLSTP.LOG & SQL Error log for any information after applying the patch. As referred by Bambola, apply SP3 as soon as possible to safeguard from Slammer if the network is exposed to internet. For more information on service pack application, refer to README.HTM file that exists on the downloaded application. _________

Thank you very much for your information guys, i have already applied SP2 on SQL Server 2k & things are fine, will consider installing of SP3 by around a year. As such our server is behind a firewall, do have latest updated anti-virus & the database is used for internal application, so i think i can take up a chance <img src=’/community/emoticons/emotion-1.gif’ alt=’:)‘ /><br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />Bhushan

True, still worth checking the vulnerability as referred in the above link by Gaurav. _________
