SQL Licensing in 7/2000

Does any one know if sql 7 and or 2000 programaticaly enforce licensing where by refusing connections after the configured number of licenses have been used up? I don’t believe licensing is enforced but would like to get a MS article that states this. Dharms

Yes, if you have set the server to per seat licensing. If you use per server (7.0) or per processor (2000) licensing, this won’t happen. —————————–

And it depends the value input on PER SEAT licensing, if chosen while setup. Satya SKJ

Hi bradmcgehee, are you saying that for sql 7, per seat with 40 licenses setup that connections will be refused once the limit set up for per seat has been reached. If so I’m still confused as I’ve done an audit of the event logs and found 12 more instances of this in the logs but not experienced a denied connection. Dharms

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/servercal.asp If per-seat licensing is chosen, a SQL Server CAL is required for a device (for example, a personal computer, workstation, terminal, personal digital assistant, or mobile phone) or user to access or use the services or functionality of either edition of SQL Server. Unfortunately this doesn’t answer my Q as this is MS’s statement for licensing. What would realy be good to see documentated is an article/KB stating that once the number of per seat licenses has been reached no more connections can or can not be made? Dharms
