SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 Now Available!

Microsoft announced that SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 is available for download on the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Subscriber Downloads site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/downloads/ ) to Enterprise, Universal, and Professional subscribers. Microsoft also announced today that SQL Server 2005 Beta 2 includes support for the AMD Opteron with Direct Connect Architecture. Satya SKJ

Looks like everyone is pounding on the server. Took more than 5 hours to download this 500 MB ISO image. Finally downloaded and installed on a test server. Install took more time than SQL Server 2K. Especially due to the pre-requisite installations like .net framework. I really like the new looks of ‘Management Studio’. I think I got bored enough looking at the same old EM for the past 4 years. Really like the way each action opens in a new window and you can still minimize it and go back to the console.

True, I haven’t got time to get hands on Beta2 and hoping to scratch during the weekend… ho ho ho.. Satya SKJ

Anyone know what the performance limitations are on SQL Server Express? Can it be used as a cheap production SQL Server, or does it have similar limitations as MSDE? Any technical descriptions of the limitations would be great. Thanks

Thanks satya. According to that article: "In fact, it is differentiated from the rest of the SQL Server 2005 editions only by the following: Lack of enterprise features support
Limited to one CPU
One GB memory limit for the buffer pool
Databases have a 4GB maximum size " MS is really giving away a lot for free.

Although it says you need Visual Studio 2005 before you can install SQL Server Express! That’s not free as far as I know… Is VS 2005 even out?

SQL Server Express is still in Beta. Think they will release it at the same time as VS 2005. Another thing that it doesn’t have that MSDE have is support for DTS runtime:

If you want a copy of SQL Server 2005 Beta 2, and you don’t have access to MSDN downloads, you can get a copy if you attent PASS, or if you cannot attend PASS, you can sign up athttp://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/bugs/ to become a beta tester of SQL Server 2005. To sign up as a beta tester, you will need a Microsoft Passport account. I just talked to one of my Microsoft contacts today, and he said that they will looking for a lot more beta testers. When filling out the survey, be sure to mention that you want to specifically beta test SQL Server 2005. —————————–

bj007 MSDN subscriptions cost a fee, while the beta program is free, and it your best bet for getting the beta of SQL Server 2005. —————————–
