Upgrade recommendation for SQL Server 2000 Std

Sorry for the double post but I asked this question on the 2000 forum and didn’t get any useful responses. I have a web-based app using SQL Server 2000 Std for the DB. Performance is fine for now but I recently upgraded the server from 2GB of RAM to 4GB and after an absurd amount of research I figured out that the extra RAM was just helping me keep the room warm So now I’m looking at an upgrade to SQL Server 2000 Enterprise or SQL Server 2005 Standard and looking for advice from those in the know. As far as I can tell we have no need for 2005 Enterprise and we will not be taking advantage of any of the new features in 2005. I probably would not consider moving to 2005 just because of the potential hassle but since the cost of either move would be about the same and 2005 Std seems to support 4 CPUs, as much memory as the OS can offer and clustering, which I might eventually use, I’m tempted to move to 2005. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

You need to figure it out what is your bottle neck to move forword… Upgrading memory from 2 to 4GB on SQL 2000 standard edition no USE..because SQL can’t use > 2GB in standard edition… Is your server experiencing memory bottle neck? If you move 2000 EE then you need to upgrade your memory too otherwise you get only 3GB for sql out of 4GB… If you want to use the benifit of ONLINE indexing, >4 CPU etc.. you can go 2005 EE otherwise no reason to pay more<img src=’/community/emoticons/emotion-1.gif’ alt=’

Thank you for your opinions Mohammed. We are not currently experiencing memory bottle necks, I’m just planning for future growth. I was planning to add a processor and purchase another processor license when it became necessary but now that I’m aware of the memory limitations of 2000 Std I think I need to plan for a software upgrade first. As far as I can tell the cost of upgrading to 2000 Enterprise is about the same as the cost of 2005 Std, around $5,000. As long as I have to spend the money I’ll probably just buy 2005 and deal with the hassle of switching over. It will be a little more work now but it will leave us in a position to use the new features in the future. Thanks again! Regards,

In that case I will say go to 2005 but make sure you test enough before changing your compatability to 90 in 2005…
