upgrading SQL SP and OS

We are planning on doing SQL Server upgrade OS from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server. We would also need to upgrade SQL Server SP from 2 currently to 3a. Now would you install service pack 3a before restoring database from backup or would you restore then install the service pack or would you install service pack 2 and then restore then install service pack 3a?
Initially upgrade on SP level on SQL to SP3a then take full backups from SQL server perspective and install fresh Win2K3 machine along with SQL server SP3a, restore the backup from old machine then continue to work. In my experience its better not to upgrade OS level, as it may continue few issues in older versions. HTH Satya SKJ

Agree. After fresh OS and restore, run Update Statistics.

If you do go for a fresh install of Windows 2003 server then SQL Server 2000, I would advise you NOT to install any Win 2003 hotfixes before installing SQL Server 2000 and SP3a. We have encountered some problems with the setup programmes for both SQL Server 2000 and SP3a not running, which was only solved by uninstalling previous hotfixes first. Tom Pullen

As the valid point raised by Thomas, have a look at this KBAhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;329329 But having said that we do have some pre-requisites for the same. You will have to first install SQL2000. A warning message may come up saying that SQL Server2000 SP2 or lower is not supported on Windows 2003.But thats just a reminder for you to apply SP3a or later. When you first install SQL it will disable all network libraries except shared memory, preventing remote connections. Applying SP3a will re-enable them. Make sure its not Win2k3 Web Edition as the only version of SQL allowed on that is MSDE2000 SP3(a). Satya SKJ
